Castella, Le Havre III
Italian photographer Vicenzo Castella was invited in 2008 by the museums of Caen, Rouen and Le Havre to capture the three cities on film. Shooting from above, Castello provided surprising and unusual views of the city sites. In Le Havre, he positioned himself at the top of two of Auguste Perret's tallest post-war reconstruction buildings: the tower of the city hall and, here, the south tower of the Porte Océane.
Pointing his lens downward, he forces our eye to gaze upon this interspace, the beach and its recreational areas. The sea can scarcely be seen and the city is reduced to a few fragments of buildings. The misleading scale, perspective and colour work completely muddle our usual reference points.
Produced for the exhibition "Le Havre. Images sur commande", this work enriches the collection of photography and video on the Le Havre area and landscape.
